Between Colmar and Mulhouse

The Saint-Barnabé Hotel and Spa is located at the heart of the Alsace region, between Mulhouse and Colmar, in the Haut-Rhin département. This is the ideal location for visitors wishing to tour the region and discover the charming Alsatian towns and villages.

Firstly there is Guebwiller, which is just a few minutes from the hotel, a town full of character that stretches along the river Lauch in the heart of the Florival valley, at the crossroads between the Route des Vins and the Route Romane and just a few kilometres from the Route des Crêtes. In this town, among others, you can take many different footpaths to the summit of the Alsatian round-topped mountains, including the highest mountain, which has taken the name of the town itself: the Grand Ballon, or Ballon de Guebwiller, with an altitude of 1424m.

Heading south, you can explore Mulhouse and its car, train and wallpaper museums. Once you are in this frontier city, you can easily cross over to Switzerland, arriving in Bâle, or Germany, arriving in Freiburg. Heading north, you can visit Colmar, renowned for its art and history, where you can stroll round the charming "Little Venice" quarter or visit the Unterlinden museum.

The Alsace region is also known for its vineyards. Join the Route des Vins, not far from the hotel, and stop off in one of the delightful villages it passes through to sample some of the region’s finest vintages. While you’re there, why not explore the stretches of vineyards on foot or by bike?

You can also enjoy the wide range of sports and leisure activities that the nearby mountain, lakes and rivers have to offer.

Walks in the mountains

The "Ballons des Vosges" Regional Park, created in 1989 by the Alsace, Franche-Comté and Lorraine regions, is the biggest of France’s Regional Natural Parks, measuring 3000km². Murbach, where the Saint-Barnabé Hotel & Spa is located, is at the centre of Eastern France’s "lungs".

These surroundings are home to many different activities, perfect for families or sports enthusiasts. The best way to discover and appreciate the area is on foot. Luckily, the "Ballons des Vosges" Regional Park has six long-distance walkways and over 7000km of footpaths signposted by the Club Vosgien, an association created in 1872 to promote pedestrian tourism around the Vosges mountains.

It goes without saying that walking and hiking are firmly established activities in this region. Make sure that you’ve got some good walking shoes and follow the signposts to discover the mountains, the crests and their unobstructed view over the Alsatian plain, the forest and the lakes. On a clear day, you can even see the Alps from the Grand Ballon, the apex of the Vosges mountains.

If you’re out in the morning, don’t be surprised if you come across a group of fawns or deer. Our hotel, located at the foot of the Grand Ballon, is ideal for those wishing to discover the protected environment in the Vosges. As there are several levels of walking difficulty, everyone can enjoy exploring the Vosges on foot.

Mountain biking is also growing in popularity in the region. Whether on foot or by bike,  get out and enjoy the fresh air in this region, much appreciated by visitors for its unspoilt natural landscapes.
